Want to know more, understand more deeply, and solve truly complex problems? A 2nd cycle Mathematics degree programme in is for those who want to develop their skills and gain specialised knowledge.

It’s a natural step for those planning PhD studies or those who want to work as mathematicians in fields such as computer science, finance, commerce, or industry. The programme also provides comprehensive preparation for teaching mathematics and a second subject: chemistry, physics, or computer science.

What will you learn?

During your studies, you will:

  • learn advanced areas of mathematics and their practical applications,
  • develop logical and critical thinking skills,
  • learn to create and analyse complex mathematical models,
  • use modern computer and computational tools,
  • learn to clearly and precisely present complex concepts – orally and in writing, including in English.

What do you gain?

  • the ability to build and test advanced mathematical models,
  • experience in solving difficult problems using specialised software,
  • fluency in communicating in mathematics and English,
  • preparedness to develop your knowledge independently and keep abreast of the latest scientific developments,
  • the opportunity to continue your studies at a doctoral school or begin a professional career.

Choose your path

Training to become a teacher begins during the 1st cycle studies and continues into the 2nd cycle. You can choose a Teacher Training Programme:

  • Mathematics and Computer Science,
  • Mathematics and Physics,
  • Mathematics and Chemistry.

After completing 1st and 2nd cycle studies, you gain full qualifications to teach your chosen subject(s) at all levels of education.

Admission process

We conduct admission process for studies at the University of Silesia using the Online Application System (IRK): irk.us.edu.pl.

Use IRK to enrol in your studies and find all the information you need. You will learn about the admission process, the deadlines, the enrolment fee, and all the documents you need to submit

Questions? Feel free to write to the International Admissions Office or visit rekrutacja.us.edu.pl and irk.us.edu.pl

Admission to the programme is open to individuals who have obtained a Bachelor’s, Engineer’s, or Master’s degree, or a foreign diploma that entitles them to study in the country of issue.

The qualification criterion is a competitive evaluation of the diploma grades.

The order of admission will be determined by the place on the ranking list created on the basis of candidate’s result (WK), calculated in line with the below formula.

Method of calculating points (candidate’s result):

WK = 3 x D + O

where:

  • WK — candidate’s result,
  • D — grade on the diploma in a degree programme assigned to mathematics (D = 0 if the candidate did not complete studies in a field assigned to mathematics),
  • O — grade on the diploma in a degree programme other than mathematics.

The candidate’s English language proficiency should be at least at a B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

We do not set minimum point thresholds for any field of study at the University of Silesia.

Committees create ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds vary every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.

Internships

You can also study at other universities in Poland and abroad thanks to the Erasmus+ and MOST programmes. With Erasmus+, you can complete an internship or part of your studies at a partner university in countries such as Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Germany, Lithuania, France, Spain, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Türkiye, and Italy.

Cooperation

The Mathematics degree programme actively collaborates with the socio-economic community, combining theoretical education with professional practice. Collaboration with primary and secondary schools primarily consists of organising student internships, during which students gain experience teaching mathematics lessons under the supervision of an academic teacher and school staff. This allows programme students to develop teaching and educational competencies in a real-world work environment.

Partnerships with the business sector, including ING Bank Śląski and Vattenfall, enable students to learn about the practical applications of mathematics in finance, data analysis, and computer science. Joint meetings with experts and internship initiatives support the development of professional competencies and increase graduates’ attractiveness in the job market.
