Are you interested in finding out how society works? Sociology is the programme for you!
In this degree programme:
- you will learn about the world and come to understand social phenomena, issues and processes,
- you will learn how to acquire, gather and analyse knowledge,
- you will understand social processes and the mechanisms of social change,
- you’ll discover how social groups form, how communities function and what interpersonal relationships are,
- you’ll learn to analyse social problems, think creatively, conduct social research and communicate effectively with those around you,
- you’ll prepare for a role as a researcher, manager or team leader by combining theory with practice.
During your 1st cycle studies, you will choose two out of six majors, and during your 2nd cycle studies, one of two majors.

Curriculum

Duration of studies: 6 semesters (1st cycle), 4 semesters (2nd cycle)
Number of ECTS credits: 180 (1st cycle)
Selected courses in Sociology – 1st cycle:
- Training in sociological imagination – develops the ability to view reality through a sociological lens.
- Quantitative research project, qualitative research project – teach students how to independently design and conduct social research.
- Specialist workshops – enable students to apply knowledge from various sub-disciplines of sociology in practical activities.
Selected modules in Sociology – 2nd cycle studies:
- Global social processes – help students understand how the mechanisms of the modern world affect our everyday lives.
- Team management – teaches effective personnel management.
- Intercultural Communication – develops the ability to understand social structures and cultural differences in order to accurately diagnose social problems.

Majors
During your 1st cycle studies, you can choose two of the six majors on offer:
- Social Communication, Marketing and Advertising,
- Organisation and Management Sociology,
- Sociology in Action,
- Digital Society,
- Modern City,
- Challenges of a Multicultural Society.
For 2nd cycle studies, you can choose from two majors:
- Human Resources in Modern Organisation
- Business and New Media Sociology
Whether a major is launched depends on the number of applicants.
Graduation requirements
In order to take the diploma examination, you have to:
- achieve the learning outcomes specified in the curriculum,
- confirm the required knowledge of a foreign language,
- receive a positive thesis grade.
You finish your studies with a diploma exam with at least a ‘satisfactory’ grade. Upon completing your studies, you will receive an engineering degree that confirms your qualifications.

Admission
Admission to studies at the University of Silesia is conducted via the Online Application System (IRK): irk.us.edu.pl.
In IRK, you can enrol for studies and check all the necessary information, including what the admission process looks like, what the deadlines are, how much the admission fee is and what documents you need to submit.

Point thresholds
In accordance with the admission criteria, no programme at the University of Silesia has got a predetermined point threshold.
Committees create ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds change every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.

To begin the degree programme you do not have to meet any other criteria.
Internships and work experience
As part of the 1st cycle studies in Sociology, you will undertake a compulsory 100-hour internship and a 50-hour field internship.
The Sociology programme will prepare you for work in various sectors. You can undertake yout internships at organisations suited to your chosen major, e.g. in public opinion research centres, government offices, non-governmental organisations, advertising agencies, consultancy firms, aid organisations and others.
The scope and duration of the internships is determined by the faculty – further details can be found on the Faculty of Social Sciences website.
Cooperation
The Sociology programme combines academic study, research and practical experience. We work with academics, the business sector and organisations, enabling you to learn from experts and develop a range of professional skills.
Study abroad

Wykładałem gościnnie m.in. w Turcji, Finlandii i Portugalii, realizuję projekty badawcze na kilku kontynentach i współpracuję z WHO oraz ministerstwem jako ekspert ds. starzenia i polityki społecznej.
