This modern programme is taught entirely in English. It combines traditional literary and cultural studies with new scientific methods. It will enable you to develop critical thinking skills, analyse literary and cultural texts, and improve your English at an advanced level.
The curriculum includes, among other things:
- British and American literature,
- theory of culture,
- English-language media,
- communication and contemporary social challenges.

Curriculum

- Critical Analysis of Literary Text or Text of Culture – teaches how to work with literary texts and cultural texts
- British Visual Arts – presents British visual arts
- Contemporary Literary Theories – shows how to analyse literary texts
- Academic Writing – teaches academic writing in English

Majors
In the English Studies: Literature and Culture programme, you do not choose a major. Instead, you can choose modules according to your interests and take advantage of tutoring, which will allow you to think independently, work on projects, and use reliable sources.
Graduation Requirements
In order to take the diploma examination, you have to:
- achieve the learning outcomes specified in the curriculum,
- know a foreign language,
- receive a positive thesis grade.
You finish your studies with a diploma exam with at least a ‘satisfactory’ grade Upon completing your studies, you will receive a degree that confirms your qualifications.

Admission Process
The admission process for studies at the University of Silesia is carried out via the Online Application System at irk.us.edu.pl (IRK).

Admission Rules
The selection process includes an examination of school-leaving certificates – results from the subjects listed below, taken as part of the written component of the school-leaving examination, are taken into account:

- The result for a subject at the basic level is multiplied by a conversion factor of 0.5; for the advanced level, by a conversion factor of 1; and then by the subject’s weighting.
- If a candidate sat a particular subject at both levels in the secondary school-leaving examination, the result from the level which, after applying the conversion factor and weighting, is more favourable to the candidate will be taken into account.
- The same subject may be taken into account twice in the assessment, provided that the candidate took it at two different levels: basic and advanced and that the result from the same level is not taken into account a second time.
- The result from a bilingual examination in a modern foreign language will be converted to an ‘advanced’ level result by multiplying it by 4/3; the maximum result at the advanced level may not exceed 100% (if it is higher, it is set to 100%).
- Detailed rules for the admission of candidates with the old Matura exam are set out in Section 14 of the Resolution.
- Admission to studies is determined by a candidate’s position on the ranking list, which is drawn up on the basis of the total number of points obtained.
- The admission process is carried out according to the limits set out and passed by the University’s Senate.
Foreign Qualifications – detailed grade conversion rules for applicants holding foreign secondary-school leaving diploma that entitles you to undertake higher education in the country of issue are set out in Annex No. 10 to the Resolution.
Note!
For applicants with a foreign secondary school-leaving certificate with:
- no English grade on the certificate: Language proficiency will be assessed via an exam. The written exam corresponds to the advanced-level Polish Matura exam in English. Percentage scores (ranging from 30% to 100%) will be converted into ranking points using the standard formula applied to domestic applicants.
- no Polish grade on the certificate: The grade in the official language of the country where the certificate was issued will be evaluated in place of Polish. If the certificate does not specify the exam level, it will automatically be considered advanced-level
Point Thresholds
We do not set minimum point thresholds for any field of study at the University of Silesia.
Committees create ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds vary every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.
Additional Criteria
To begin the degree programme you do not have to meet any other criteria.
Internships and Work Experience
The English Studies: Literature and Culture programme does not include work placements or internships.
