Description
The programme responds to the needs of Polish diplomacy and administration within the structures of the European Union. We support young people who want to work in public administration and diplomatic institutions in Poland and abroad.
This is a unique programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Silesia. The programme focuses on multilingualism and provides knowledge in the social sciences and humanities.
You will take part in bilingual classes conducted in Polish and English. As part of the compulsory classes, you will also learn French and Spanish.
As a graduate you will know how to:
- analyse and understand political, social and economic reality,
- critically interpret events,
- understand the relationships between institutions at the national, European and global levels.
After graduation, you will be able to find employment in:
- European institutions and international organisations,
- diplomatic and consular institutions,
- government and local government administration.

Curriculum

Duration of studies: 4 semesters
Number of ECTS credits: 120
Selected courses in the International Studies in Political Science and Diplomacy programme:
- International Organisations – shows the principles and structure of international organisations.
- European Union Law – introduces the impact of EU law on the legal systems of member states.
- Art of Argumentation – introduces techniques of logical argumentation.
- Global Economy – analyses the factors of globalisation and its importance for economic development.
Forms of classes:

- laboratories – putting knowledge into practice
- tutorials – group discussions
- seminars – preparation for writing a thesis
Majors
You do not choose a major in this programme. However, each semester you choose two classes that interest you from the elective modules.
These focus on different areas of international relations and diplomacy. During these classes, you will also learn to analyse and solve complex global problems.
Graduation requirements
To take the final examination, you must:
- pass all the learning outcomes specified in the curriculum,
- confirm the required knowledge of a foreign language,
- obtain a positive grade for your thesis.
You complete your studies when you pass the diploma examination. After completing your studies, you will receive a higher education diploma confirming your qualifications and readiness to enter the labour market.

Admission
Admission to studies at the University of Silesia is conducted via the Online Application System at irk.us.edu.pl (IRK).
In IRK, you can enrol for studies and check all the necessary information, including What the admission process looks like, what the deadlines are, how much the admission fee is and what documents you need to submit.

Admission rules
Admission to the programme is based on the average grade point average from the 1st cycle programme.
The average is calculated depending on the field of study:
- social sciences – average × 3,
- humanities – average × 2,
- other fields – average × 1.
The best candidates in the recruitment process can obtain a double degree as part of their studies:
- Polish – issued by the University of Silesia in Katowice,
- Lithuanian – issued by Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas.

Point thresholds
We do not set minimum point thresholds for any field of study at the University of Silesia.
Committees create ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds change every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.

Additional criteria
Compulsory classes are held in Polish and English.
- You must know English at B2 proficiency level to participate in bilingual classes.
The programme also includes classes in French and Spanish.
- You do not need to know these languages beforehand. Learning begins from the beginner’s level.
Internships and work experience
During your studies, you will complete 160 hours of compulsory internships, which you will do in the last semester.
During the internships, you will learn about the specifics of the profession and develop skills useful in your professional life, such as:
- cooperation in an international team,
- time management, responsibility and reliability,
- effective communication in foreign languages.
The internship takes place at institutions of your choice, which may become your future place of work. These include:
- diplomatic missions and consular posts,
- public, government and local government institutions,
- international organisations and European Union institutions.
During your studies, you will also participate in study visits to diplomatic missions and institutions related to international relations.
Cooperation
The programme combines theoretical knowledge with the realities of work in politics and diplomacy. Each module is taught by two groups of lecturers:
- researchers and teachers from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Silesia in Katowice and foreign visiting professors,
- practitioners – experienced representatives of diplomacy, public administration, business and social organisations.
As a student of this programme, you can also study abroad as part of the Erasmus+ programme. You have the opportunity to
- complete an internship at a selected institution in one of the 31 countries participating in the programme,
- complete part of your studies at a foreign partner university, including in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Portugal, Spain and Turkey.
