Description

Mediterranean Studies is a programme for those interested in the cultural development of the Mediterranean world. It is the ideal choice for future residents of Mediterranean countries. It is particularly suited to those interested in studying Mediterranean cultures and literatures and looking for an opportunity to learn ancient languages from regions of fundamental importance to human civilisation. Students take part in courses covering literature, art, archaeology, history and more specialised topics, such as the history of the family, sexuality, and the role of plants and animals in Mediterranean cultures. An attractive addition to the programme are classes on Mediterranean cuisine and wine culture, as well as field trips to museums and archaeological sites, annual meetings with national and international researchers, and additional academic courses (e.g. a cuneiform script course or a series of classes on prominent figures of antiquity) designed to develop students’ skills and knowledge. 

During your studies, you will learn about the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea:

  • you will understand how their cultures and societies have evolved;
  • you will trace the development of civilisation from antiquity to the modern era;
  • you will focus on antiquity and the Middle East;
  • you will learn Latin, Ancient Greek, Egyptian (hieroglyphs) and Coptic;
  • you will see how the ancient world influences the modern world, including in popular culture and museums.

As part of the programme courses, you will:

  • examine ancient literary texts,
  • analyse works of art,
  • explore and analyse historical events,
  • discuss family life, interpersonal relationships and the place of nature in culture,
  • collaborate with archaeologists, Egyptologists, Coptologists, Latinists, Hellenists and museum curators.

As a student, you will take part in, amongst other things:

  • classes on food and wine,
  • visits to museums,
  • archaeological work,
  • classes on ancient languages,
  • academic meetings with researchers from Poland and other countries,
  • additional courses, e.g. learning cuneiform script or classes on famous figures from antiquity.

 

Discover the languages of the Mediterranean area

During your studies, you will learn the ancient languages of the region. You will learn the basics of:

  • Greek,
  • Latin,
  • Egyptian (hieroglyphs),
  • Coptic.

CURRICULUM

Duration of studies: 6 semesters

Number of ECTS credits: 180

Selected degree programme courses:

  • Civilisations of the Ancient Middle East – provides skills in reading hieroglyphic and Coptic texts, and introduces students to the ancient history of the Middle East.
  • Major themes of mythology in European culture – discusses selected motifs from Greek myths in ancient texts, with reference to their reception in later periods.
  • Mediterranean cuisine – introduces students to the flavours, aromas and colours of Mediterranean dishes from the earliest times.
  • Nature in Mediterranean culture – describes the landscapes, plants, animals and their significance in Mediterranean countries.

  • seminars – classes based on group discussions

As a student of Mediterranean Studies, you will study one of the modern languages of the Mediterranean region in depth. You can choose from:

  • Modern Greek,
  • Italian,
  • Spanish,
  • Arabic.

During 2nd cycle studies (Classical and Mediterranean Studies), you will deepen your knowledge in one of two majors of your choice:

  1. Classical Studies (designed for classical philologists and anyone with a translation-level proficiency in ancient languages)
  2. Mediterranean Studies (designed for Mediterranean studies specialists, historians, philosophers, cultural studies scholars and anyone interested in the archaeology, religion, literature and culture of the Mediterranean)

In order to take the diploma examination, you have to:

  • achieve the learning outcomes specified in the curriculum, 
  • know a foreign language,
  • receive a positive thesis grade. 

You finish your studies with a diploma exam with at least a ‘satisfactory’ grade. Upon completing your studies, you will receive an engineering degree that confirms your qualifications.

Admissions to university is determined by the results of the Matura exam. We take into account the written examination in the selected subjects.

We take into account the following results:

  • Polish language – weight 60%,
  • modern foreign language – weight 20%,
  • one subject of your choice with the highest score – weight 20%.

Limit of slots: 25

Admission to 2nd cycle studies (Classical and Mediterranean Studies) is based on the diploma grade and the grade point average. A Bachelor’s degree in Mediterranean Studies, Classical Studies, History or a Bachelor’s degree (or engineering degree) in another field is required – if you choose the Classical Studies programme, knowledge of Latin or Greek at a translation level is required.

Limit of slots: 25

We do not set minimum point thresholds for any field of study at the University of Silesia.

Committees create ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds vary every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.

To begin the degree programme you do not have to meet any other criteria.

Internships

Mediterranean Studies programme does not include work placements or internships.

Develop your passions

Courses in the Mediterranean Studies programme are taught by experienced, working archaeologists. During your studies, you participate in practical workshops in museums and at excavation sites. You can also take additional courses to help you develop your skills and expand your knowledge. Furthermore, you meet with researchers from Poland and other countries every year.

Study abroad

As part of the Erasmus+ programme, you can complete an internship abroad at various institutions or partially study at one of the partner universities in 31 programme countries, including:
