AQUAMATICS – Interdisciplinary Water Environment Management

Katowice, Sosnowiec

Description

AQUAMATICS – Interdisciplinary Water Environment Management, Master’s degree studies

Aquamatics teaches you to operate in places where water becomes a key challenge. You analyse the effects of climate change and its impact on rivers, lakes, and groundwater. You look for the causes of problems and look at how to reduce their effects in practice.

You work with real data. You carry out water monitoring, i.e. the systematic checking of water status and quality. You assess what puts the environment and people at risk and then plan corrective action. You use simple mathematical models and statistics to predict the effects of your decisions.

You design ways to retain water in the field and in cities. You create solutions such as reservoirs, parks, and green roofs that collect rainwater and protect against drought and flooding. You learn to manage water responsibly and with the future in mind.

We base education on the proven principles of Wilhelm von Humboldt.

  • You learn broadly, learning about different areas of knowledge that complement each other. This gives you a better understanding of complex water management issues.
  • You learn by doing. You gain experience through practical classes and participation in research. You put knowledge into action straight away.
  • You learn by means of cooperation. You work alongside lecturers in research teams. Together, you implement projects and solve real problems.

Your studies give you a practical preparation for expert and managerial work in water management – especially in a world where water is becoming increasingly precious.

  • Water law – you learn the legal principles related to the use, protection and management of water.

Forms of classes:

  • lectures,
  • practicals,
  • field classes,
  • seminars,
  • warsztaty,
  • laboratories.

Hydrobiology

You learn to investigate and assess the state of water and protect aquatic environments. You learn about how aquatic ecosystems work and what threatens them – locally and globally. You learn how to carry out water monitoring and plan activities that improve water conditions, such as lake and river restoration. Studying prepares you to work in accordance with current water conservation principles and national water policy.

Hydrology

You learn how water circulates in the environment and how humans affect its quantity and quality. You learn about processes taking place in rivers, lakes, and groundwater. You learn to forecast hydrological phenomena, such as floods and droughts, and to use GIS tools in the analysis of water data. Studying prepares you for work in water resource planning and protection.

Hydroengineering Technology

You learn how the equipment that collects, treats, and drains water works. You learn about the reservoirs, water intakes, and installations used in cities and municipalities. Some of the activities take place in the field – you visit operating facilities and learn about how they work. This prepares you for work in the operation and supervision of water infrastructure.

To take the final examination, you must:

  • pass all the learning outcomes specified in the curriculum,
  • confirm the required knowledge of a foreign language,
  • obtain a positive grade for your thesis.

You complete your studies when you pass the diploma examination

After completing your studies, you will receive a higher education diploma confirming your qualifications.

Detailed information on the rules for awarding diplomas and the requirements for the diploma thesis can be found in the Rules and Regulations of Studies at the University of Silesia and the Diploma Award Regulations.

Admission

Admission to studies at the University of Silesia is conducted via the Online Application System (IRK): irk.us.edu.pl.

In IRK, you can enrol for studies and check all the necessary information, including what the admission process looks like, what the deadlines are, how much the admission fee is and what documents you need to submit.

Questions? Send an email to the International Admissions Office or visit rekrutacja.us.edu.pl and irk.us.edu.pl.

You can apply for studies if you have a Bachelor’s, an Engineer’s or a Master’s degree. We also accept foreign diplomas if they entitle you to study in the country where they were issued.

You will find yourself best suited to this programme if you have completed a degree in aquamatics or a related field in Earth and environmental sciences, biology, chemistry or engineering and technical sciences.

Admission is determined by the grade on your diploma and your grade point average.

If you have completed a different programme or studied at a different university, we will review your curriculum. If there are any gaps, we will ask you to make them up in the form of paid compensatory classes within the time limit specified by the dean.

Limit of spots: 25

At the University of Silesia, we do not set minimum point thresholds for any field of study.

Committees create ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds change every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.

To begin studying this programme, you must provide a certificate from your doctor. The doctor confirms that you are able to study this programme and that there are no health contraindications.

Internships and work experience

There are no compulsory professional internships in the Aquamatics programme. It is up to you to decide how you want to gain additional experience. However, the programme itself is clearly practical in nature – during exercises, laboratories, field classes and workshops, you will acquire skills that are really useful in your work.

During your studies, you will also learn outside the classroom. You can:

  • take a paid internship and earn money at the same time,
  • take part in study visits and see what work in the field or in companies looks like,
  • participate in workshops and training courses that teach specific skills.

Thanks to this, after graduating from the University of Silesia, you will be able to apply your knowledge in practice. You can work in a laboratory, in industrial or scientific fields. Your studies will prepare you for real professional challenges.

Cooperation with the community

During your studies, you can take advantage of the programme’s cooperation with institutions and universities in Poland and abroad.

During your studies, you can go abroad with Erasmus+. You can go to one of 31 countries. There, you will do an internship or study for a whole year or one semester. You can study in Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Greece, Spain, Lithuania, Germany, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey and Italy, among others.

This cooperation broadens your experience and gives you access to an international academic environment.
