Do you enjoy reading? Are you interested in the culture of the English-speaking world? Would you like to gain knowledge in the humanities? English Studies: Literature and Culture is the perfect degree programme for you!

This modern programme is taught entirely in English. It combines traditional literary and cultural studies with new scientific methods. It will enable you to develop critical thinking skills, analyse literary and cultural texts, and improve your English at an advanced level.

The curriculum includes, among other things:

  • British and American literature,
  • theory of culture,
  • English-language media,
  • communication and contemporary social challenges.


It is the perfect choice for ambitious and curious individuals who want to develop their humanities knowledge, analytical thinking and intercultural skills.

Curriculum

Duration of studies: 6 semesters

Number of ECTS credits: 180

Selected courses:

  • Critical Analysis of Literary Text or Text of Culture – teaches how to work with literary texts and cultural texts
  • British Visual Arts – presents British visual arts
  • Contemporary Literary Theories – shows how to analyse literary texts
  • Academic Writing – teaches academic writing in English

  • tutoring – individual work with a tutor
  • seminars – classes based on group discussions

In the English Studies: Literature and Culture programme, you do not choose a major. Instead, you can choose modules according to your interests and take advantage of tutoring, which will allow you to think independently, work on projects, and use reliable sources.

In order to take the diploma examination, you have to:

  • achieve the learning outcomes specified in the curriculum, 
  • know a foreign language,
  • receive a positive thesis grade. 

You finish your studies with a diploma exam with at least a ‘satisfactory’ grade Upon completing your studies, you will receive a degree that confirms your qualifications.

Admission Process

The admission process for studies at the University of Silesia is carried out via the Online Application System at irk.us.edu.pl (IRK).

Admissions to university is determined by the results of the Matura exam. We take into account the written examination in the selected subjects.

We take into account the following results:

  • English language – weight 60%,
  • Polish language – weight 20%,
  • one subject of your choice with the highest score – weight 20%

 

Limit of slots: 25

We do not set minimum point thresholds for any field of study at the University of Silesia.

Committees create ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds vary every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.

To begin the degree programme you do not have to meet any other criteria.

Internships and Work Experience

The English Studies: Literature and Culture programme does not include work placements or internships.
