Description

Do you want to know English well and work with it on a daily basis? Choose our English Studies degree programme. First cycle studies last 6 semesters. After completing them, you will receive a Bachelor’s degree and solid preparation for professional work.

Learn by doing

During your studies, you will learn English in theory and in practice. You will learn to write and speak English fluently, understand different types of texts, hold conversations in everyday situations, and communicate at work. The curriculum covers written language, conversations, grammar and comprehension of English-language texts. Moreover, you will also find that linguistics plays an important role within the programme, as it is a science that will allow you to understand how language works and how it changes.

Classes are taught by experienced academics and specialists: linguists, literary scholars, experts in culture, religion, psychology, pedagogy and sociology, as well as translators and interpreters, including sworn translators and interpreters.

What’s next?

Completing a degree in English Studies opens up many career opportunities. Depending on your chosen major, after graduation you can work as a teacher or translator/interpreter. You will also find employment in the media, tourism and service sectors, especially in international relations. Many of our graduates work in editorial offices and cultural institutions, where a good knowledge of English is required.

Curriculum

Duration of studies: 1st cycle – 6 semesters, 2nd cycle – 4 semesters

Number of ECTS credits: 1st cycle studies – 180, 2nd cycle studies – 120

Selected courses:

  • history and culture of the English language area,
  • linguistics – the study of language, its structure and development,
  • practical English language learning (phonetics, written language, conversations, practical grammar, reading comprehension),
  • second foreign language.

Forms of classes:

  • lecture,
  • practicals,
  • seminars – classes based on group discussions.

During your 1st cycle studies, you can choose from two majors:

  • Teacher Training Programme with German

This major will prepare you for work in a school. You will learn how people develop at different stages of life, understand the needs of children and young people, learn how to talk to school students and convey knowledge in a clear manner. You will learn how to support students and how to care for their development. You will also learn about how the school and the education system work.

  • Translation and Interpreting with Second Language

In this major, in addition to English, you will also learn a second language: Chinese or Japanese. You will get to know the basics of linguistics and learn translation and interpretation (consecutive and simultaneous). You will also learn about the culture and realities of a given region.

You can deepen your knowledge in 2nd cycle studies—you can choose from up to 5 majors:

  • Foreign Language for Business Purposes

In this major, you will learn English at an advanced level, including business and specialist English. During your studies, you will learn about current social and economic issues and international financial markets. You will learn how to prepare commercial documents and translate and interpretate texts.

  • American and Canadian Studies for Intercultural Communications and Diplomacy – studies in English

You will learn English in practice, as well as get to know the basics of diplomacy, international relations and intercultural communication, which will allow you to communicate effectively with people from other cultures. After graduation, you can work in government offices, public institutions, international companies, or organisations that cooperate with foreign countries.

  • Culture – Media – Translation

In this major, in addition to advanced language knowledge, you will also learn about issues related to literature, culture and language. Your studies will prepare you for work in the media, advertising, public relations, administration and cultural institutions. You will learn how culture and society work. This will make it easier for you to find your way around different workplaces.

  • Teacher Training Programme

This major will prepare you to work as an English teacher in accordance with Polish law. During your studies, you will learn about psychology and foreign language teaching. You will learn how people develop at different stages of life and how to conduct educational classes in schools. You will also learn the principles of effective communication and good practices in teaching.

  • Translation and Interpreting

In this major, you will learn to translate and interpret English texts, including specialist texts. You will learn about the tools used by translators and interpreters, such as parallel texts, language corpora and translation verification sources.

You will learn how to use appropriate translation and interpretation techniques, adapt your style and language to your audience, and edit and proofread texts correctly. You will also choose a second language: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German or Arabic.

In order to take the diploma examination, you have to:

  • achieve the learning outcomes provided for in the curriculum,
  • confirm the required proficiency in a foreign language,
  • receive a positive thesis grade.

You graduate when you pass your final examination

Upon completion of your studies, you will receive a higher education diploma confirming your qualifications.

Admission process

The admission process for studies at the University of Silesia is carried out via the Online Application System at irk.us.edu.pl (IRK).

1st cycle studies

Admissions to university is determined by the results of the Matura exam. We take into account the written examination in the selected subjects.

We take into account the following results:

  • English language – weight 60%
  • Polish language – 20%
  • one subject of your choice with the highest score – 20%

Limit of slots: 100

2nd cycle studies

Admission to studies is determined by the grade on the diploma and the grade point average from 1st cycle, 2nd cycle or long-cycle studies.

Limit of slots: 200

We do not set minimum point thresholds for any field of study at the University of Silesia.

Committees create ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds vary every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.

Internships

We know that theory alone is not enough. That is why during your studies you also participate in internships.

During 1st cycle studies:

  • as part of the major Teacher Training Programme with German, you will complete
    30 hours of psychological and pedagogical practice internship and 90 hours of teaching practice internship,
  • as part of the Translation and Interpreting major, you will complete 60 hours of professional practice internship.

Internships will allow you to test your skills, learn about the realities of work, and establish your first professional contacts while still at university.

During your 2nd cycle studies, you can combine studying with working.

  • in the majors: Culture–Media–Translation, American and Canadian Studies for Intercultural Communications and Diplomacy, and Translation and Interpreting, you will complete 90 hours of professional practice internship,
  • as part of the majors Teacher Training Programme and Foreign Language for Business Purposes, you will complete 60 hours of professional practice internship.

In addition, during your studies, you can go on an internship abroad as part of the Erasmus+ programme. The cities where our students can study include:

Alicante, Aveiro, Bergen, Funchal, Granada, Istanbul, Košice, Kaunas, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Lisbon, Malaga, Olomouc, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostella, Sassari, Saarbrucken, Seoul, Shenyang, Sofia, Trieste, and Verona.

Cooperation

During your studies, you will benefit from cooperation with institutions and universities in Poland and abroad. Classes are also taught by native speakers from China, Japan, Germany, and the United States. Every year, professors from foreign universities teach classes as part of the programme. This allows you to learn about different approaches to language and culture. You also have the opportunity to contact partner universities abroad, including in:

  • Germany,
  • Sweden,
  • Czechia,
  • Romania,
  • Italy,
  • Spain,
  • France.

In addition, the University of Silesia is a member of the Transform4Europe alliance. This allows you to learn in an international environment, participate in joint projects and come into contact with different languages and cultures.

Moreover, our students participate in projects such as:

  • workshops with business practitioners (PwC),
  • workshops with sworn translators,
  • IT courses and training,
  • workshops preparing participants for obtaining language certificates,
  • research projects conducted by lecturers,
  • Silesian Science Festival,
  • internships in the broadly understood IT industry, in translation agencies and as part of the Erasmus+ programme,
