Description
English Studies at the 2nd cycle level is a degree programme for people who want to deepen their knowledge of English i and develop the competencies needed in work with language, communication, translation, education or international business. It is a perfect fit for those who want to consciously use English in complex professional and intercultural situations.
During your studies, you develop your English at C2 level and deepen your knowledge of the language: its structure, varieties, cultural contexts and ways of functioning in communication. You also learn to critically analyse information, solve communication problems, and use modern tools useful in working with text, language, and technologies.
The degree programme allows you to choose a major tailored to your plans. You can develop toward intercultural business communication, English language teaching or translation and interpreting. A translation major with a second foreign language is also available in a full-time studies form.
It is a good choice if you want to develop professionally and academically, work in an international environment, improve your understanding of intercultural communication, gain advanced translation or teaching skills, and prepare for further education, including doctoral studies.

Curriculum

Duration of studies: 4 semesters
Number of ECTS credits: 120
Subjects common to all majors:
Linguistics — you deepen your knowledge of the English language, its structure, varieties, contexts of use and role in communication.
Practical English — you develop your English at an advanced level, practice precise speaking, argumentation and working with texts in various academic and professional situations.
Forms of classes:
- lecture,
- practicals,
- seminars – classes based on group discussions,
- workshops.
Majors
Intercultural Communication in Business
Negotiations — you develop the skills needed in business conversations, professional contacts and cooperation with partners from different countries.
Business Translation — you learn to work with texts and communication situations typical of the business environment.
Communication Management — you learn how to plan and conduct effective communication in an international and intercultural environment.
Teacher Training Programme
English Language Teaching — you learn to plan and conduct classes, choose working methods, and support students with different learning needs.
Psychology and Pedagogy — you deepen your knowledge of the learning process, student development and school functioning.
Language Acquisition — you learn about the processes of language acquisition and learning and how to use this knowledge in your teaching practice.
English Translation and Interpreting
Translation and Interpreting — you develop translation and interpretation skills in various professional situations, also in the form of consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.
Translation of Specialised and Utility Texts — you work with texts used in business, various institutions, administration and professional communication.
Digital Tools in the Work of a Translator — you learn to use technologies that support translation, text editing and the organisation of translation work.
Translation and Interpreting with Second Language

Practical Learning of a Second Language — you develop knowledge of another language and learn to use it in professional communication.
Specialised translations — you learn to work with professional and practical texts, also in the context of international contacts.
Part-time studies
Part-time studies offer a more focused curriculum, tailored to weekend classes. Three major are available: Intercultural Communication in Business, Teacher Training Programme, and English Translation and Interpreting.
Graduation requirements
To take the diploma examination, you must:
- achieve the learning outcomes provided for in the curriculum,
- receive a good thesis grade.
You finish your studies with a diploma exam with at least a ‘satisfactory’ grade.
As a graduate, you receive a diploma that confirms your qualifications.

Admission process
The admission process for studies at the University of Silesia is carried out via the Online Application System at irk.us.edu.pl (IRK).
Use IRK to enrol in your studies and find all the information you need. You will learn about the admission process, the deadlines, the enrolment fee, and all the documents you need to submit.

Admission rules
You can apply for admission to 2nd cycle studies, if you have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or a foreign diploma that allows you to study in the country of its issue:
- in English Studies,
- in the field of Philology, with major in English,
- in Philology or Applied Linguistics, if the primary language was English.
Admission is determined by your position on the ranking list, which is drawn up on the basis of your degree classification and your average mark.
Please note: when registering in the Online Application System (IRK), the candidate indicates their preferred major, but the final allocation depends on the place on the ranking list, the limit of places and the launch of a given major. In the case of Teacher Training Programme and Translation and Interpreting with Second Language, additional criteria apply, including requirements regarding prior preparation or knowledge of a second language. Detailed rules of the admission process and assignment to majors are available in the IRK system.

Point thresholds
At the University of Silesia, we do not set minimum point thresholds for any degree programme.
The committees draw up ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds vary every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.

Fee for one semester of part-time studies:

Internships
During your studies, you complete professional internship that allows you to combine the knowledge you gain during class with real-world work experience. Through the internship, you learn about everyday tasks in your chosen professional field, the operating principles of institutions or companies, and the language of the industry.
As part of the Intercultural Communication in Business major, you will complete 40 hours professional internship.
As part of the Teacher Training Programme major, you will complete 30 hours of teaching practice in a secondary school.
As part of the Translation and Interpreting major you will complete 40 hours professional internship. The same number of professional internship hours is required for theTranslation and Interpreting with Second Language.
The same internship requirements apply to full-time and part-time studies.
Cooperation
A big advantage of this programme is the opportunity to travel abroad — as part of the Erasmus+ programme, you can:
- go on an internship abroad to one of 31 countries,
- study for a semester or a year at a partner university, e.g. in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Portugal, Slovenia, Estonia, Bulgaria or Lithuania.

Depending on your chosen major, you can:
- work in companies and institutions operating internationally, especially where knowledge of intercultural communication, negotiation and business language is required,
- deal with communication, servicing foreign partners, international cooperation or coordination of activities in multicultural teams,
- work as an English teacher after obtaining the required teaching qualifications,
- work as a translator of functional, specialised, business and institutional texts,
- provide interpreting services, including consecutive and simultaneous interpreting,
- use a second foreign language in translation work and international contacts – in the case of a translation major with a second foreign language available in full-time studies,
- work in translation agencies, public and private institutions, administration, media, education, the language services sector or international organisations,

- depending on your chosen major, you have a depended your knowledge in the field of intercultural communication in business, English language teaching, or translation and interpreting.

After completing your studies:
- you use English at C2 level, both orally and in writing,

- you search, evaluate and use information from various sources, including digital ones,
- you analyse complex linguistic, communication and cultural problems and are able to select appropriate methods and tools,
