Intercultural Communication – 1st cycle studies
Want to learn how to function effectively in a multicultural environment and navigate diverse teams and professional situations? Intercultural Communication degree programme is the best choice!
Due to international contacts and growing migration, more and more people are working in institutions and companies with foreign capital, both in Poland and abroad. During your studies, you will learn how to communicate effectively across cultures.
Thanks to these studies, you will:
- gain a deeper understanding of Polish culture and learn to understand other parts of the world;
- combine knowledge from various fields and prepare for work in cultural, diplomatic, and business institutions;
- communicate freely with people from other cultures;
- understand how cooperation in business and diplomacy works;
- learn how to build an image, write official texts, and prepare for speeches;
- learn how to collaborate effectively with a foreign partner;
- plan and implement activities that promote culture at home and abroad;
- share your own culture with others and help them better understand their world.
The curriculum was created on the basis of the International Polish Studies degree program and was adapted to the New Study Concept at the University of Silesia.

Curriculum

Duration of studies: 6 semesters
Number of ECTS credits: 180
Selected degree programme courses:
- Analysis of Applied Culture Texts – teaches how to read and understand various cultural messages.
- Self-Presentation and Nonverbal Communication – shows how to communicate without words – in theory and practice.
- History and Culture of Polish Regions – explains how Polish regions have changed in the past and today.
- Official Etiquette and Diplomatic Protocol – highlights how behaviour influences communication.
- Languages Around the World – shows what connects and distinguishes languages.

Majors
As a Intercultural Communication student, you do not choose a major.
The curriculum is divided into three modular blocks:
- Open module offer (300 hours) – language classes, physical education, and electives in the general university module.
- Area-specific modules (180 hours) – electives in the following areas: environment and technology, civil society, critical thinking, personal development and health, the digital world, and theories of knowledge and cognition.
- Specialisation modules (1,495 hours) – preparing students for independent analysis and description of scientific phenomena and cultural processes.
Graduation requirements
In order to take the diploma examination, you have to:
- achieve the learning outcomes specified in the curriculum,
- know a foreign language,
- receive a positive thesis grade.
You finish your studies with a diploma exam with at least a ‘satisfactory’ grade. Upon completing your studies, you will receive an engineering degree that confirms your qualifications.

Admission process
The admission process for studies at the University of Silesia is carried out via the Online Application System at irk.us.edu.pl (IRK).

Admission rules
Admissions to university is determined by the results of the Matura exam. We take into account the written examination in the selected subjects.
We take into account the following results:
- Polish language – weight 60%,
- modern foreign language – weight 20%,
- one subject of your choice with the highest score – weight 20%.
Limit of slots: 25
Point thresholds
We do not set minimum point thresholds for any field of study at the University of Silesia.
Committees create ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds vary every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.
Additional criteria
To begin the degree programme you do not have to meet any other criteria.
Internships
During your studies, you complete a mandatory 30-hour professional internship.
Thanks to this:
- you combine knowledge from classes with real work,
- you learn how to operate in your profession and become familiar with the daily tasks of the positions for which your studies prepare you,
- you become familiar with the industry’s language and work practices.
The rules for organising internships are defined by the Rector’s regulation. Details can be found in the internship regulations for your programme. These regulations explain, among other things:
- what you are expected to learn during the internship,
- how long the internship lasts, what form it takes, and where you can complete it,
- what responsibilities you and your supervisor have,
- how you complete the internship,
- when you can opt out of it partially or completely.

Cooperation
Classes are taught by experienced specialists from Poland and abroad, who have a thorough knowledge of the Polish language and the realities of the workplace. The curriculum is constantly evolving and responds to market needs. Classes emphasise practical experience essential for international relations – instead of a written assignment, you prepare a project and take a final exam.
Study abroad
As part of the Erasmus+ programme, you can go abroad: complete an internship in one of 31 countries available or study for part of a semester at a partner university in countries such as:
- Bulgaria,
- Estonia,
- France,
- Spain,
- Lithuania,
- Germany,
- Portugal,
- Slovenia,
- Italy.
