Description

Korean Studies – 1st cycle studies

Korean Studies is a programme designed for those who wish to use the Korean language in a practical way.

During your studies, you will learn about the Korean language, literature, culture, history and politics, as well as their significance in social and professional life both within the country and abroad. You will practise communicating in Korean, collaborating with others, and acquire the knowledge needed for work and everyday life.

Curriculum

Duration of studies: 6 semesters

Number of ECTS credits: 180

Selected degree programme courses:

  • Basics of the Korean Language – Korean language classes.
  • Culture of Asian Countries – introduces the culture of modern South Korea and selected Asian countries.
  • Practical Korean – allows you to practise speaking and writing in Korean.
  • Korean Literature – presents Korean literary texts from the part and modern times.
  • Korean Economy – explains how the South Korean economy works.

Forms of classes:

  • lectures
  • practicals
  • seminars – classes based on group discussions

As a student of Korean Studies, you do not choose a major.

The programme offers field-specific modules that will teach you practical skills and show you how to apply them in various areas of life.

The field-specific modules include:

  • modules in linguistics,
  • modules in culture and literature,
  • modules in history and society,
  • modules in language education,
  • elective modules: (available from the 4th semester).

In order to take the diploma examination, you have to:

  • achieve the learning outcomes specified in the curriculum, 
  • know a foreign language,
  • receive a positive thesis grade. 

You finish your studies with a diploma exam with at least a ‘satisfactory’ grade. Upon completing your studies, you will receive an engineering degree that confirms your qualifications.

Admission Process

The admission process for studies at the University of Silesia is carried out via the Online Application System at irk.us.edu.pl (IRK).

Admissions to university is determined by the results of the Matura exam. We take into account the written examination in the selected subjects.

We take into account the following results:

  • modern foreign language – weight 60%,
  • Polish language – weight 20%,
  • one subject of your choice with the highest score – weight 20%

Limit of slots: 50

We do not set minimum point thresholds for any field of study at the University of Silesia.

Committees create ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds vary every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.

To begin the degree programme you do not have to meet any other criteria.

Korean Studies programme does not include work placements or internships.

We are developing partnerships with South Korean universities so that students can exchange experiences and undertake joint research and classes.

The knowledge and skills you acquire during your studies will enable you to navigate with ease the Korean language, literature, culture, politics, economy and geography, as well as matters of importance to Korean partners.

As a graduate of Korean Studies:

  • you have an understanding of the languages, cultures and civilisations of the Far East, enabling you to collaborate with others;
  • you reflect on the language, literature, culture, politics and geography of South Korea;
  • you analyse events and phenomena in South Korea, using the language and basic research tools.

What can you do after graduation?

  • You can find work in the cultural sector, the media, public administration, and in international and Korean companies.
  • Knowledge of the Korean language and the country’s cultural context opens the door to careers in business, politics and diplomacy.
  • You can continue your studies as part of 2nd cycle studies.

Graduate knowledge

After completing your studies:

  • you will be familiar with the theory, methods and terminology of linguistics and related disciplines (e.g. literature, culture, religion, politics and administration) and be able to apply them in your work,
  • you will understand South Korean culture, its geography, history, media and their role in social and economic life,
  • you are familiar with the linguistic, historical, social, economic, cultural and legal context of South Korean political life,
  • you have knowledge of the Korean language, its history, structure and role in the modern world,
  • you are able to communicate in Korean: speaking, writing and understanding texts, and you are also familiar with regional dialects,
  • you understand the mechanisms of communication between people and across different cultural environments,
  • you are familiar with the cultural, social, political and economic life of South Korea and the Far East, and know how to act entrepreneurially,
