Description

Physics is a 2nd cycle programme conducted in English. The programme is aimed at individuals who wish to deepen their knowledge of physics and participate in advanced scientific research.

Physics combines experiments, data analysis and theoretical knowledge, and its development has an impact on new solutions in energy, medicine, environmental protection and materials technologies.

The Master’s programme is offered at the A. Chełkowski Institute of Physics at the University of Silesia in Chorzów. You will participate in research projects, seminars and workshops with scientists from around the world. You will learn how to conduct research, analyse data and use modern computer methods.

Thanks to Polish-French cooperation, you can obtain a double degree – from the University of Silesia and the Le Mans University in France.

The programme allows you to participate in scientific projects, use modern laboratories and develop experimental, analytical and computer skills. Thanks to this, after graduation you can continue your scientific career, work in laboratories or in innovative technology companies.

The Master’s programme in Physics gives you the opportunity to choose one of two majors.

Fundamental and Applied Physics – this major focuses on learning through experiments and projects, and you can choose subjects that match your interests. Classes are held in small groups and feature modern teaching methods.

Nanophysics and Mesoscopic Materials (modelling and application) – you study in Poland and France, work in international research teams on nanomaterials and mesoscopic structures, prepare your Master’s thesis in English, and after graduation you can obtain a double degree.

You will obtain a double degree by completing an internship in the fourth semester at our partner university in France. During your stay at Le Mans University, you will conduct research for your master’s thesis under the supervision of scientists from Poland and France.

Additionally, in the second semester, you can take part in Laboratory Training in English and learn about research techniques for nano- and mesomaterials. The programme focuses on scientific projects, and the results of students’ research are often published in international scientific journals, which supports the development of science and international cooperation.

The 2nd cycle programme ends with the thesis defence and the award of a Master’s degree.

In order to take the diploma examination, you have to:

  • achieve the learning outcomes provided for in the curriculum,
  • know a foreign language,
  • receive a positive thesis grade.

The diploma examination is a summary of your studies. You demonstrate what you have learned and how you can apply your knowledge in practice.

Admission

Admission to studies at the University of Silesia is conducted via the Online Application System (IRK): irk.us.edu.pl.

In IRK, you can enrol for studies and check all the necessary information, including what the admission process looks like, what the deadlines are, how much the admission fee is and what documents you need to submit.

Full-time 2nd cycle studies – taught in English

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s, Engineer’s or Master’s degree, or a foreign qualification entitling the holder to undertake further studies in the country of issue.

Admission criteria: selection based on the grades on the degree diploma. The order of admission will be determined by the place on the ranking list created on the basis of candidate’s result (WK), calculated in line with the below formula.

Method of calculating points (candidate’s result):

WK = 3 x D + O

where: 

WK — candidate’s result, 

D — grade on the degree certificate for a field of study primarily classified under the physical sciences (D = 0 if the candidate has not completed a degree in a field classified under the physical sciences), 

O — grade on the degree certificate for a degree programme primarily classified under disciplines other than the physical sciences.

The candidate has to submit a relevant medical certificate on the lack of medical contraindications to take up studies in this programme.

Full-time 2nd cycle studies – taught in English

We do not set minimum point thresholds for any field of study at the University of Silesia.

Committees create ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds vary every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.

To begin studying this programme, you must provide a certificate from your doctor. The doctor confirms that you are able to study this programme and that there are no health contraindications.

Internships and work experience

During your second-cycle studies, you will complete an internship. For the major:

  • Fundamental and Applied Physics, 90 hours,
  • Nanophysics and Mesoscopic Materials, 180 hours.

During the internship, you will learn how to operate modern equipment and apply modern technologies, research and measurement techniques. The internship will prepare you to work in scientific laboratories, industrial technical facilities and research teams.

You can also do an Erasmus+ internship at one of 31 partner universities in Europe. This is a great opportunity to gain experience, learn about new technologies and develop your skills in an international environment. Choose from countries such as Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Bulgaria and Estonia, and open the door to a career in Poland and around the world!
