Description

East Slavonic Studies is a degree programme in which you study East Slavic languages and learn about the cultures and societies of Eastern Europe. You will learn Russian, Ukrainian or Belarusian, and in selected majors, Western languages as well This degree programme combines language learning, cultural reflection and up-to-date knowledge of the modern world.

Right from the start, you will be putting the language into practice. You will take part in conversations, practicals, lectures and sessions in language labs—including with native speakers. You will quickly start speaking and understanding, and step by step you will learn translation and interpretation, including specialised, concerning film and audiovisual. You will also take part in cultural and academic events, such as Maslenica, Embroidery Day and literary competitions, which help you to better understand the language and culture.

You will learn to communicate fluently in your chosen East Slavic language. You will learn its grammar, vocabulary and how to use it in everyday and professional situations. You will discover the culture, literature, history and contemporary reality of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus—including their social and political contexts. You will learn to analyse texts, understand cultural differences and use the language effectively.

This is the programme for you if you are interested in languages, culture and international affairs, and want to learn through practical experience rather than just from a textbook. The programme will prepare you for a career in languages—in fields such as translation, media, culture, education, tourism or organisations working with Eastern European countries. You will gain specific skills, experience and knowledge that you can put to use in your work in Poland and abroad.

Duration of studies: 1st cycle – 6 semesters, 2nd cycle – 4 semesters

Number of ECTS credits: 1st cycle studies – 180, 2nd cycle studies – 120

Selected degree programme courses:

  • Folklore in Russian Literature – you will explore Russian folk literature and discover how folkloric motifs influence the meaning and message of literary works.

  • Practical Russian Phonetics – you will learn to speak Russian clearly and correctly, with the right accent and intonation.

  • Practical Russian and foreign language – you will practise speaking, writing, reading and listening comprehension so that you can use the languages fluently in everyday life and at work.

  • Russian art and architecture – you will discover the most important buildings and works of art and understand what they reveal about Russia’s history and culture.

  • Business Russian – you will learn the language used at work and in business, discover specialist vocabulary and acquire the basic economic knowledge required for professional interactions.

  • Tourism Geography of Russia – you will discover Russia’s most attractive regions and learn what factors influence tourist traffic.

  • Basic concepts of linguistics – you will familiarise yourself with key topics such as grammar, meaning, syntax and communication, which will help you better understand how language works.

During your studies, you will primarily learn Russian and Ukrainian, as well as—if you wish—Belarusian. You will practise speaking, writing, reading and listening comprehension. At the same time, you learn about the culture, history and everyday life in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, which helps you to better understand the language and the socio-cultural context of its speakers.

During your 1st cycle studies, you can choose from as many as 6 majors, which you begin as early as the first semester:

  1. East Slavonic Studies: Ukrainian in Business and Administration

You will learn Ukrainian and Russian to a level that allows you to use them fluently in office, administrative and business contexts. You practise interpreting and translation, as well as drafting letters and email correspondence. You also learn about the culture and realities of East Slavic countries, which facilitates effective functioning in international contacts.

  1. East Slavonic Studies: Business Russian

You start by learning Russian from scratch, and then gradually master the language used in the workplace and in business. You learn business vocabulary and practise translation. You also find out what modern Russia is like and what its economic realities are.

  1. East Slavonic Studies: Applied Russian and English

You will learn to translate between Polish, Russian and English. You will explore various types of translation—including film and specialist translation—and learn how to use computer tools designed to support translators’ work. You will also gain knowledge of translation theory and the skills needed to work in an international environment.

  1. East Slavonic Studies: Russian for Tourism

You will learn the Russian language used when working with tourists and visitors from abroad. You will learn about Russian culture, history and geography, and practise communicating in hotels, travel agencies and the service sector. You will also develop your ability to work with people from different cultural backgrounds.

  1. East Slavonic Studies: Russian with Translating and Interpreting

You are preparing for a career as a translator by mastering Russian to a high standard.  You practise various forms of translation and interpreting, including concerning film and literature.  You also learn about Russian culture and society, which enables you to translate accurately and with insight.

  1. East Slavonic Studies: East Slavonic Cultures and Languages

You will learn Russian and a second East Slavic language—Ukrainian or Belarusian. You will discover the culture, history, traditions and everyday life of the countries in the region. You will also acquire basic translation skills that will be useful in your professional career and further education.

During 2nd cycle studies, you will deepen your knowledge of Russian and learn how to use it at an advanced level in your professional and research work. You can choose from two majors

  1. East Slavonic Studies: Business Russian
    You will learn how to use Russian in the workplace, in business and in professional contexts. You will learn business language, the principles of business correspondence, media and advertising, and practise translating specialist texts. At the same time, you will prepare your dissertation and deepen your knowledge of modern Russia.
  2. East Slavonic Studies: Russian with Translating and Interpreting
    You are preparing for a career as a translator and interpreter. You practise specialist translation and interpretation, including legal, and hone your practical knowledge of Russian. You learn text analysis and prepare a dissertation based on a chosen linguistic or translation-related topic.

In order to take the diploma examination, you have to:

  • achieve all the learning outcomes provided for in the curriculum,
  • receive a positive thesis grade.

You finish your studies with a diploma exam with at least a ‘satisfactory’ grade.

As a graduate, you receive a diploma that confirms your qualifications.

The admission process for studies at the University of Silesia is carried out via the Online Application System at irk.us.edu.pl (IRK).

Admissions to university for the 1st cycle studies is determined by the results of the Matura exam. We take into account the written examination in the selected subjects.

We take into account the following results: 

  • modern foreign language – weight 60%
  • one subject of your choice with the highest score – weight 20%
  • Polish language – weight 20%

Knowledge of Russian or Ukrainian is not required.

Limit of slots: 50

Admission to 2nd cycle studies is determined by the grades on your Bachelor’s degree diploma and the average grade achieved as part of Russian Studies or East Slavonic Studies degree programme.

Graduates from other degree programmes may also apply for admission, provided they have a command of Russian at least at B2 level. In such cases, the results of the written Russian language exam and an interview are taken into account.

Limit of slots: 25

We do not set minimum point thresholds for any field of study at the University of Silesia.

Committees create ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds vary every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.

Internships

There is no compulsory professional internship as part of this programme. Nevertheless, you can continue to develop your skills outside of lectures during your studies. You have access to free training courses leading to a certificate, which allow you to acquire specific, practical skills.

You will learn, among other things, how to work as a tour guide, how to use CAT tools in translation, and how to use graphic design software such as InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat, which are useful for working with text.

Cooperation

A big advantage of this programme is the opportunity to travel abroad. For example, as part of the Erasmus+ programme, you can:

  • go on an internship abroad to one of 31 countries,
  • study for a semester or a year at a partner university, e.g. in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Portugal, Slovenia, Estonia, Bulgaria or Lithuania.

In addition, the University of Silesia is a member of the Transform4Europe alliance. This allows you to study in an international environment, take part in joint projects and engage with different languages and cultures.

After completing your 1st cycle programme, you can continue your studies with a 2nd cycle degree in East Slavonic Studies, pursue an academic career through a PhD programme, or start a career in the professional world.

East Slavonic Studies degree programmer provides you with specific and practical career opportunities. After graduation, you can, for example:

  • work in translation agencies, publishing houses and the online and traditional media
  • find employment in cultural institutions and research centres,
  • work for companies in Poland and abroad that collaborate with Russian- and Ukrainian-speaking partners,
  • take up a role in local government, central government or non-governmental organisations working with Eastern Europe,
  • teach in schools and educational institutions after obtaining teaching qualifications,
  • work in tourism—as a tour leader, guide, representative or travel agency employee,
