1st cycle studies
English Studies: Culture – Media – Translation is a programme for people who want to have a good command of English and understand the world of contemporary culture and media. During your studies, you will learn English at a level of at least C1 and learn the classical basics of philology in a modern approach. You will learn how to analyse cultural texts, how the media works, and how to convey meaning between languages.
During your studies, you will learn to translate literary, functional and media text. You will also learn the basics of audiovisual translation and the tools that support the work of a translator. We place great emphasis on practical experience, so you will regularly work with texts and media. Project-based classes will allow you to develop your own interests and choose the direction that best suits your career plans.
2nd cycle studies
2nd cycle studies in the English Studies: Culture – Media – Translation programme is a perfect match for those who want to deepen their knowledge of English and consciously work with literature, culture, media, and translation. During your studies, you will develop English at a C2 level, learn to critically analyse cultural and media texts, and independently conduct research, creative, and translation projects.
The curriculum combines courses in literature, culture, media, linguistics, and translation. You can explore your interests through elective modules, seminars, and project work. During your studies, you will also learn modern digital tools, translation-supporting technologies, and ways of working with media.
It is a good choice if you want to develop advanced linguistic, analytical, and translation skills and prepare for a career that requires excellent English, independence, critical thinking, and a comfortable understanding of contemporary culture.

Curriculum

Duration of studies: 6 semesters (1st cycle), 4 semesters (2nd cycle)
Number of ECTS credits: 180 (1st cycle), 120 (2nd cycle)
Selected courses in the English Studies: Culture – Media – Translation degree programme (1st cycle studies):
- Working with Literary or Cultural Texts — you learn to read and analyse various cultural texts, identify main themes, meanings and ways of constructing a message, working in a workshop and practical manner.
- Practical English – you practise pronunciation, grammar, writing, reading comprehension and conversing in English, using it in practical situations
- Linguistics: Introduction to Contrastive Linguistics for Translators — you compare Polish and English to better translate written and audiovisual texts, including subtitles, dialogues, and localisations.
- History, Culture, Literature of English-Speaking Countries — you learn about the literature, traditions and culture of English-speaking countries in order to better understand the language and context of the projects you create.
- Media: Multimedia workshops — you create simple multimedia projects, working with images, sound and video, and learning to tell stories in digital form.
Selected courses in the English Studies: Culture – Media – Translation degree programme (2nd cycle studies):
Interpretation of Cultural Text — you deepen your ability to analyse literature, media, and various cultural texts, learning to independently interpret their meanings, contexts, and modes of influence.
Media: Media Narratives — you analyse how contemporary media tell stories, construct messages, and influence how we understand culture, society, and the world.
Translation — you work with various forms of translation: translation theory, media translation, literary translation, specialised translation, and modern technologies that support the work of translators.
Creative Writing — you develop your own writing skills, work with language creatively, and learn to consciously construct texts in English.
Research Project — you prepare your own research project related to literature, culture, media, or translation, developing independence, argumentation, and academic skills.

Majors
You do not choose a major in this degree programme. All students follow the same curriculum. However, this does not mean there is one rigid path you have to take. The curriculum offers many modules to choose from, allowing you to develop your own interests and tailor your studies to your own plans and the topics you want to explore in greater depth.
Graduation requirements
In order to take the diploma examination, you have to:
- achieve the learning outcomes provided for in the curriculum,
- receive a good thesis grade.
You finish your studies with a diploma exam with at least a ‘satisfactory’ grade.
As a graduate, you receive a diploma that confirms your qualifications.

Admission process
The admission process for studies at the University of Silesia is carried out via the Online Application System at irk.us.edu.pl (IRK).

Admission rules
Admissions to university for the 1st cycle studies is determined by the results of the Matura exam. We take into account the written examination in the selected subjects.
We take into account the following results:
- English language – weight 60%
- one subject of your choice with the highest score – weight 20%
- Polish language – weight 20%,
Limit of slots: 50
You can apply for admission to 2nd cycle studies, if you have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or a foreign diploma that allows you to study in the country of its issue:
- in English Studies,
- in the field of Philology, with major in English,
- in Philology or Applied Linguistics, if the primary language was English.
Admission is determined by your position on the ranking list, which is drawn up on the basis of your degree classification and your average mark.
Number of places: 50
Point thresholds
We do not set minimum point thresholds for any field of study at the University of Silesia.
Committees create ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds vary every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.
Internships
In the third year of 1st cycle studies, you will complete 80 hours of professional internship. This is an opportunity to see what working in the industry is like and to put the knowledge you have gained during your studies into practice. You will learn the practical skills needed in the profession and become familiar with the work culture and industry jargon.
You do not undertake professional internships as part of the 2nd cycle studies.
Cooperation
A big advantage of this programme is the opportunity to travel abroad — as part of the Erasmus+ programme, you can:
- go on an internship abroad in one of 31 countries,
- study for a semester or a year at a partner university, e.g. in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Portugal, Slovenia, Estonia, Bulgaria or Lithuania.

After completing your 1st cycle studies, you can enter the job market or continue your studies with a 2nd cycle programme, developing your linguistic, translation, media, and analytical skills. 1st cycle studies provide a foundation for working with text, translation, media, and culture, and prepare for further specialisation.
After completing your 2nd cycle studies, you can pursue a professional career in areas requiring excellent English language skills, content analysis, media work, translation, and intercultural communication. You can also pursue further academic development,, for example, at as part of a doctoral programme.
Depending on your chosen level of study, interests and further specialisation, you can:
- work as a translator of written, specialist, literary, media or audiovisual texts,
- deal with the translation and adaptation of content for media, culture, institutions or online communication,
- work on creating, editing and analysing content in the media, editorial offices, websites or communication departments,
- find employment in cultural institutions, international organisations, the education sector or companies operating in a multilingual environment,
- use linguistic, analytical and digital competences in design, research, promotional or communication work,
- create your own media, cultural or literary content, e.g. texts about books, films, TV series, popular culture, media and contemporary phenomena, also on the Internet and social media,
- continue your studies in 2nd cycle studies, postgraduate studies, or doctoral studies.
Graduate knowledge
After completing your 1st cycle studies:
- you know English and understand its role in culture, literature and the media,
- you are familiar with the literature, culture and history of English-speaking countries and their contemporary contexts,
- you understand how the media work and the significance of their cultural aspects,
- you are familiar with specialist terms in the fields of literature, culture, language and translation,
- you know what translation entails, including translating texts for the media,
- you know the basics of copyright law, ethics, and the principles of working in professions related to your degree programme.
After completing your 2nd cycle studies, you will deepen this knowledge: you will gain a better understanding of advanced literary, cultural, media, and linguistic phenomena, and you will be able to consider them in a broader theoretical and research context. You will also be familiar with more advanced translation strategies, including the translation of media, specialised, and literary texts, and you will understand the importance of digital tools, technology, and copyright law in working with text, media, and translation.
Graduate skills
After completing your 1st cycle studies:
- you use English at C1 level in speaking and writing,
- you analyse literary, cultural and media texts, taking into account their social and cultural context,
- you can translate various types of texts from and into English,
- you prepare written assignments and projects in English, including in a team environment,
- you search for, evaluate and use information from various sources, including digital ones,
- you communicate clearly in English with both specialists and people outside the industry,
- you plan your work and learn independently, using modern tools.
After completing your 2nd cycle studies, you develop these skills at an advanced level. You speak English at a C2 level, can debate in English on specialist topics, independently formulate research problems and implement your own projects. You can analyse literature, culture and media in-depth, prepare more complex academic, creative and media texts, and use advanced digital tools and technologies supporting translation.
Social skills
After completing your 1st cycle studies:
- you can assess your skills and know when it is worth developing them further,
- you are ready for further education and lifelong learning,
- you value teamwork and are able to collaborate in a multicultural environment,
- you act responsibly and in accordance with professional ethics,
- you respect others and their perspectives, ensuring good communication,
- you take responsibility for your tasks and professional decisions.
After completing your 2nd cycle studies, you are prepared for greater professional and academic independence. You can critically evaluate your own knowledge, draw on expert opinions, organise teamwork, and act responsibly in areas related to culture, media, translation, and intercultural communication. You also develop readiness for design, research and creative work and for further development, including as part of doctoral studies or other forms of education.
