Curriculum

Duration of studies: 6 semesters
Number of ECTS credits: 180
Subjects common to all majors:
Practical English — you develop your spoken and written English: you work on pronunciation, grammar, writing, conversation, and text comprehension.
Linguistics — you learn how language works: you study its structure, varieties, history, variability, and the connections between language, culture, and communication.
Teacher Training Programme:
English Language Teaching — you learn how to plan and conduct English classes and how to adapt teaching methods to the different needs of students.
Modern Technologies in Foreign Language Teaching — you learn digital tools and how to use them in education.
English Translation and Interpreting:
Forms of Translation — you practice written and oral translation, as well as working with general, specialised, and practical texts.
Digital Tools in Translator Work — you learn technologies that support translation and working with texts.
Translation and Interpreting with Chinese:
Chinese — you gradually learn Chinese and develop communication skills in a new language.
Chinese Culture and Society — you learn the cultural context necessary for translation and international communication.
Translation and Interpreting with Japanese:
Japanese — you gradually learn Japanese and develop the basics of communication in this language.
Japanese Culture and Society — you learn the cultural and social realities of Japan, which are important for translation and intercultural communication.
Forms of classes:

Majors
You can choose from four majors:
Teacher Training Programme
This major is for those who wish to prepare for a career as an English language teacher. You develop your language skills, but you also learn how to plan and conduct classes, how to adapt teaching methods to different learners, and how to use modern technologies in teaching. Pedagogical preparation and internships in educational institutions are also an important part of this path.
English Translation and Interpreting
This major is for those who want to develop their careers in translation and interpreting. You learn to translate general and specialised texts, explore consecutive and simultaneous interpreting techniques, and work on text analysis and editing. This path is more focused on functional, professional, and specialised translation than literary or media translation.
Translation and Interpreting with Chinese
This major is for those who want to combine English with Chinese language learning. You develop your English skills, gradually learn Chinese, and become familiar with the culture and social realities of China. You also prepare for translating in a multilingual and intercultural environment.
Translation and Interpreting with Japanese
This major is for those who want to combine English with Japanese. You develop your English skills, gradually learn Japanese, and become familiar with the culture and social realities of Japan. You also prepare for translation and interpreting in various professional contexts.
A significant advantage is that classes in the Chinese and Japanese majors are also taught by native speakers from China and Japan.
Graduation requirements
To take the diploma examination, you must:
- achieve the learning outcomes provided for in the curriculum,
- receive a good thesis grade.
You finish your studies with a diploma exam with at least a ‘satisfactory’ grade.
As a graduate, you receive a diploma that confirms your qualifications.

Admission process
The admission process for studies at the University of Silesia is carried out via the Online Application System at irk.us.edu.pl (IRK).

Admission rules
Admissions to university is determined by the results of the Matura exam. We take into account the written examination in the selected subjects.
We take into account the following results:
- English language – weight 60%
- Polish language – 20%
- one subject of your choice with the highest score – 20%
Number of places: 125
Please note: when registering in the Online Application System (IRK), the candidate indicates their preferred major, but the final allocation depends on the place on the ranking list, the limit of places and the launch of a given major.
Knowledge of the Polish language is required.
Point thresholds
At the University of Silesia, we do not set minimum point thresholds for any degree programme.
The committees draw up ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds vary every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.
Internships
We know that theory alone is not enough. That is why during your studies, you also complete internships that allow you to test your knowledge and skills in a real-world professional environment.
As part of the Teacher Training Programme major, you will complete 30 hours of psychological and pedagogical internship and 90 hours of teaching internship.
As part of the English Translation and Interpreting major, you will complete 40 hours of professional internship. The same number of professional internship hours is required for the Translation and Interpreting with Chinese and Translation and Interpreting with Japanese majors.
Internships help you connect what you learn in class with your daily professional work. Through them, you will learn about typical tasks, the operating principles of institutions or companies, the language of the industry, and the work culture. You can also begin building your first professional contacts while still studying.
Cooperation
A big advantage of this programme is the opportunity to travel abroad — as part of the Erasmus+ programme, you can:
- go on an internship abroad to one of 31 countries,
- study for a semester or a year at a partner university, e.g. in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Portugal, Slovenia, Estonia, Bulgaria or Lithuania.

Alicante, Aveiro, Bergen, Funchal, Granada, Istanbul, Košice, Kaunas, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Lisbon, Malaga, Olomouc, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela, Sassari, Saarbrücken, Seoul, Shenyang, Sofia, Trieste, and Verona.
In addition, the University of Silesia is a member of the Transform4Europe alliance. This allows you to learn in an international environment, participate in joint projects and come into contact with different languages and cultures.

After graduation, depending on your chosen major, you can:
- teach English after obtaining the required teaching qualifications,
- work as a translator of everyday, specialised, and professional texts,
- provide interpreting services, including consecutive and simultaneous interpreting,
- use Chinese or Japanese in translation work, international contacts, and multicultural environments,,
- work in translation agencies, institutions, international companies, the language services sector, or administration,,
- serve foreign clients and partners in businesses, tourism, education, or the service sector,
- continue your studies with a 2nd cycle degree and further develop your language, teaching, or translation skills.
Graduate knowledge
After completing your studies:
- you will know how the English language works, how it is structured, how it changes over time, and how it functions in various communication situations,
- you will be familiar with the most important issues in linguistics, including the relationship between language, culture, and communication,
- you will be familiar with the literature, history, and culture of English-speaking countries and understand their importance for working with language,
- you will understand how to analyse linguistic, cultural, and applied texts,
- you will be familiar with the basic principles of copyright law, intellectual property protection, and professional ethics,
- depending on your chosen major, you will know the basics of teaching or translation, including specialised translation or working with Chinese or Japanese.
Graduate skills
After completing your studies, you will:
- be fluent in both spoken and written English,
- search for, evaluate, and use information from various sources, including digital ones,
- analyse linguistic phenomena and texts in English, taking into account their cultural, social, and practical context,
- recognise language styles, registers, and varieties, and be able to adapt your communication style to the situation and audience,
- prepare presentations, projects, and written works in English,
- be able to work independently and in a team, even in a multicultural environment,
- depending on your chosen major, be able to perform tasks related to teaching English or translating and interpreting; in Chinese or Japanese majors, you will also develop communication skills in a second foreign language.

After completing your studies, you will:
- be able to critically evaluate your knowledge and know when it is worth expanding it or seeking expert advice,
- think critically about language, communication, and cultural phenomena,
