Italian Studies – begin your adventure

Would you like to learn Italian and gain a better understanding of Italian culture? Choose Italian Studies degree programme. The programme is suitable for both those who already know Italian and those who are just starting to learn it. You will gain a solid foundation in the language and culture, which will be useful in your professional and everyday life.

Theory and practice in everyday life

During your studies, you will learn to speak Italian fluently and write in the language correctly. You will also learn a second Romance language of your choice or English. You will discover how the language works and how to communicate effectively in it. You will learn to understand texts, hold conversations and respond appropriately in everyday and professional situations. At the same time, you will explore Italian culture, history and literature, which will help you better understand the people and their way of thinking.

What’s next?
After graduating, you can work anywhere where a good command of languages and intercultural skills are valued. You will find employment in areas such as international communications, cultural promotion, translation and customer service. The knowledge and skills you gain will also enable you to further develop your language skills or teach Italian at primary school level (after obtaining additional teaching qualifications outside your degree programme).

Curriculum

Duration of studies: 6 semesters

Number of ECTS credits: 180

Selected degree programme courses:

  • practical Italian,
  • Italian literature,
  • intercultural communication – you learn how to communicate with people from other cultures, understand differences in behaviour and avoid misunderstandings in private and professional contacts,
  • translation theory and practice – you will learn how to translate texts from one language into another, choose the right words and style, and solve typical problems encountered by translators,
  • Italian phonology and phonetics – you will learn how Italian sounds, correct pronunciation, accent and sentence melody.

Forms of classes:

  • lectures,
  • practicals,
  • seminars – classes based on group discussions.

In the Italian Studies programme, you can choose between two majors, which begin in the second semester:

  • Italian Studies: Intercultural Communication

As part of this major, you will develop your knowledge of Italian and a second Romance language. You will learn to communicate effectively with people from different countries and cultural backgrounds. You will explore Italian culture and literature and discover how the language functions in the media, on the internet and in social life. You will be able to apply the skills you acquire in an international workplace.

  • Italian Studies: Italian-English Translation Studies

This major prepares you for a career in translation.  You will develop practical proficiency in Italian and English and learn the principles of translating written texts. You will work with various types of texts and learn how to adapt your language to suit the audience. A minimum B1 level of English is required.

In order to take the diploma examination, you have to:

  • achieve the learning outcomes provided for in the curriculum,
  • confirm the required proficiency in a foreign language,
  • receive a positive thesis grade.

You finish your studies with a diploma exam with at least a ‘satisfactory’ grade.

As a graduate, you receive a diploma that confirms your qualifications.

Admission process

The admission process for studies at the University of Silesia is carried out via the Online Application System at irk.us.edu.pl (IRK).
 You can enrol for a degree programme and find all the necessary information in the IRK system. You will find out how the admissions process works, what the deadlines are, how much the application fee is, and what documents you need to submit.

Admissions to university is determined by the results of the Matura exam. We take into account the written examination in the selected subjects.

We take into account the following results:

  • modern foreign language – weight 60%
  • Polish language – weight 20%
  • one subject of your choice with the highest score – weight 20%

Limit of slots: 75

We do not set minimum point thresholds for any field of study at the University of Silesia. Committees create ranking lists during the admission process.

Admission thresholds vary every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.

Internships

There is no compulsory professional internship as part of this programme. However, you can gain experience by joining the Italian-English student research group.  By participating in the group’s activities, you will take part in workshops, meetings and events dedicated to the Italian and English languages and the cultures of both of these linguistic areas.  The group’s supervisor is Agnieszka Robaszkiewicz, MA.

Cooperation

During your studies, you will benefit from cooperation with institutions and universities in Poland and abroad. A significant advantage is the opportunity to travel abroad, for example as part of the Erasmus+ programme.

As part of the Erasmus+ programme, you can:

  • go on an internship abroad to one of 31 countries,
  • study for a semester or a year at a partner university, e.g. in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Portugal, Slovenia, Estonia, Bulgaria or Lithuania.

In addition, the University of Silesia is a member of the Transform4Europe alliance. This allows you to study in an international environment, take part in joint projects and engage with different languages and cultures.

Career paths

After completing your 1st cycle programme, you can continue your studies with a 2nd cycle degree in Italian Studies, and then pursue an academic career through a PhD programme.

If you decide to enter the workforce, you have a wide range of opportunities. You can, for example

  • take part in international projects, including at cultural institutions in Poland and abroad,
  • work with texts—editing them, translating them or creating content for websites and online portals,
  • find employment in Polish and foreign companies, particularly where contact with international partners is key,
  • work in education, e.g. on language courses or training projects,
  • run your own business, e.g. in translation, education or consultancy.

A degree in Italian Studies opens up various career paths for you—you choose the one that best suits your interests and career plans.

Graduate knowledge

After completing your studies:

  • you understand how the Italian language and a second foreign language function—what they consist of and how they evolve,
  • you recognise different styles and varieties of language (e.g. colloquial, formal, media-related),
  • you are familiar with the culture, history and social life of Italian-speaking countries,
  • you are familiar with the major trends in Italian literature and art,
  • you understand the translation process and the strategies used in translation,
  • you know how persuasion and effective communication work in Italian and a second foreign language.

Graduate skills

After completing your studies:

  • you search for and select the necessary information from various sources,
  • you analyse texts as well as linguistic, cultural and social issues,
  • you translate texts from Italian and English into another language,
  • you have a B2 level of proficiency in Italian and a B1 level in a second foreign language; you are able to express your views clearly, both orally and in writing, and to justify them,
  • you work independently and collaborate effectively within a team.

Social skills

After completing your studies:

  • you are able to communicate effectively in an international team,
  • you demonstrate openness to other cultures, customs and ways of thinking, as well as an awareness of cultural differences and their impact on communication,
