Spanish Studies – work with the language
If you want to learn Spanish and use it in real-life communication situations, Spanish Studies is the ideal choice for you. During your studies, you will develop your knowledge of Spanish and a second foreign language – either a Romance language or English. You will learn about Spanish-speaking countries, their history, culture and ways of thinking. This will help you to more easily understand people and the ways in which they communicate.
- Practical language learning
Right from the start, you will be using the language in a practical context. You will learn to speak, write and understand different types of texts. You will discover how the language is used in conversation, the media and the workplace. You will learn the basics of translation and effective intercultural communication. - What can you do after graduation?
After completing your studies, you can work in companies that collaborate with foreign countries, in tourism, media, or cultural institutions. You will also gain the foundation for working as a translator and teaching Spanish at both the elementary and secondary levels.

Curriculum

Duration of studies: 6 semesters
Number of ECTS credits: 180
Selected degree programme courses:
- practical Spanish,
- Spanish literature,
- intercultural communication – you learn how to communicate with people from other cultures, understand differences in behaviour and avoid misunderstandings in private and professional contacts,
- translation theory and practice – you will learn how to translate texts from one language into another, choose the right words and style, and solve typical problems encountered by translators,
- Spanish phonology and phonetics – you will learn how Spanish sounds, correct pronunciation, accent and sentence melody.

Majors
1st cycle studies:
As part of the Spanish Studies degree programme, you can choose from two majors, both of which begin in the second semester:
- Spanish Studies: Intercultural Communication
As part of this major, you will develop your knowledge of Spanish and a second Romance language. You will learn to communicate effectively with people from different countries and cultures. You will explore Spanish culture and literature, and you will learn how the language functions in the media, the internet, and social life. You will utilise these acquired skills in your work in an international environment.
- Spanish Studies: Spanish-English Translation Studies
This major will prepare you for work in the translation field. You will learn the practical use of Spanish and English and the principles of written translation. You will work with various types of texts and learn how to adapt the language to the intended audience. A minimum of a B1 level of English is required.
There is no division into majors in 2nd cycle studies.
Graduation requirements
In order to take the diploma examination, you have to:
- achieve all the learning outcomes provided for in the curriculum,
- confirm the required proficiency in a foreign language,
- receive a positive thesis grade.
You finish your studies with a diploma exam with at least a ‘satisfactory’ grade.
As a graduate, you receive a diploma that confirms your qualifications.

Admission process
The admission process for studies at the University of Silesia is carried out via the Online Application System at irk.us.edu.pl (IRK).
You can enrol for a degree programme and find all the necessary information in the IRK system. You will find out how the admissions process works, what the deadlines are, how much the application fee is, and what documents you need to submit.

Admission rules
Admissions to university is determined by the results of the Matura exam. We take into account the written examination in the selected subjects.
We take into account the following results:
- modern foreign language – weight 60%
- Polish language – weight 20%
- one subject of your choice with the highest score – weight 20%
Limit of slots: 75
Point thresholds
We do not set minimum point thresholds for any field of study at the University of Silesia.
Committees create ranking lists during the admission process. Admission thresholds vary every year, as they depend on the number of candidates, their high school graduation exam results, and the applicable qualification rules.
Internships
There is no compulsory professional internship as part of this programme. However, you can gain experience in the El Mundo Hispano Student Research Group, which promotes the Spanish language and the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. The group is very active, organising meetings, film nights, concerts, and workshops. Students also participate in events dedicated to Spanish culture, such as Hispanophonie. The club is open not only to university students but also to secondary school students and graduates of the University of Silesia. The group’s supervisor is Aniela Kucharska, PhD.
Cooperation
During your studies, you will benefit from cooperation with institutions and universities in Poland and abroad. A significant advantage is the opportunity to travel abroad, for example as part of the Erasmus+ programme.
As part of the Erasmus+ programme, you can:
- go on an internship abroad to one of 31 countries,
- study for a semester or a year at a partner university, e.g. in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Portugal, Slovenia, Estonia, Bulgaria or Lithuania.
In addition, the University of Silesia in Katowice is part of the European Transform4Europe alliance. This allows you to study in an international environment, take part in joint projects and engage with different languages and cultures.

After completing your studies, you can continue your development – with a Master’s degree in Romance Studies, followed by a PhD.
If you want to enter the job market, you have many options. You can:
- take part in international projects, including at cultural institutions in Poland and abroad,
- work with texts—editing them, translating them or creating content for websites and online portals,
- find employment in Polish and foreign companies, especially those where contact with partners from other countries is important
- work in education, e.g. by conducting language courses or implementing training projects,
- run your own business, e.g. in translation, education or consultancy.
A degree in Spanish Studies opens up a wide range of opportunities for you – you can choose the path that best suits your plans and ambitions.
Graduate knowledge
After completing your studies:
- you understand how the Spanish language and a second foreign language function—what they consist of and how they evolve,
- you recognise styles and varieties of language (e.g. everyday language, formal language, media language),
- you understand how the culture, history, and social life of Spanish-speaking countries are shaped,
- you are familiar with the most important trends in Spanish literature and art,
- you understand the translation process and the strategies used in translation,
- you understand the mechanisms of persuasion and effective communication in Spanish and a second foreign language.
Graduate skills
After completing your studies:
- you search for and select necessary information from various sources,
- you analyse texts and linguistic, cultural, and social issues,
- you translate texts from Spanish and English into another language,
- you speak Spanish at a B2 level and a second foreign language at a B1 level; you can clearly express your views both orally and in writing and justify them,
- you work independently and in a team.
Social skills
- you are able to communicate effectively in an international team,
- you are open to other cultures, customs, and ways of thinking, and are aware of cultural differences and their impact on communication,
